FAIRFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 2002--General Electric Company today named Michael R. McAlevey, a former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission official as Chief Corporate and Securities Counsel.
McAlevey, 38, is a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Alston & Bird, LLP. From 1998 to 2001, he was Deputy Director of the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance.
"Mike has extensive knowledge of corporate securities and governance laws and displayed great analytical and leadership skills in both the public and private sectors," GE General Counsel Benjamin W. Heineman said. "He'll have a lead role both in GE's global securities law compliance, filings and other disclosure and in helping GE be at the cutting edge in its response to emerging corporate governance law, regulation and best practices. Mike will be a tremendous addition to the leadership team at GE."
At the SEC, McAlevey had primary responsibility for cooperation between the Corporation Finance and Enforcement divisions and served as his division's liaison to Congress. He also had responsibility for several major projects, including Regulation M&A, Regulation FD, SEC interpretations on the use of electronic media in securities offerings and rules about the integration of public and private offerings. In 2001, he received the SEC Chairman's Award for Excellence for his work on Regulation FD.
He teaches a graduate course in Mergers and Acquisitions at The Georgetown University Law Center and has taught insider trading law, securities regulation and corporate governance in the executive MBA program at Emory University in Atlanta.
McAlevey earned his law degree at the University of Virginia School of Law and a bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Washington & Lee University, where became a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
After earning his law degree, McAlevey served as a law clerk to Judge Emmett R. Cox of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
