BELFORT, FRANCE (December 16, 2003) --- GE Power Systems shipped its first uprated Frame 6FA gas turbine (model PG6111FA) in November, for the expansion of an existing cogeneration plant in Stadtwerke Duisburg, Duisburg-Wanheim, Germany. A second uprated 6FA will be shipped to the site in December.
The two gas turbines will be used for a new combined-cycle installation being added at the cogeneration plant, which supplies both power and district heating. The facility is owned by Stadtwerke Duisburg AG. The prime contractor for engineering, procurement and construction of the combined-cycle plant is Lurgi Energie und Entsorgung Gmbh of Düsseldorf, Germany.
The new plant will have a total combined-cycle power output of approximately 240 megawatts, with the two gas turbines contributing more than 150 megawatts and a steam turbine generating the remaining 90 megawatts. Natural gas will be the primary fuel, with distillate fuel as a backup. The two gas turbines are expected to enter commercial operation in October 2004.
In addition to the Frame 6FA gas turbines, GE is supplying auxiliary equipment, two electrical generators and center line construction for the project. The gas turbines were manufactured in GE's Belfort, France facility.
The uprated Frame 6FA technology was introduced by GE in 2002. The new machines offer an output increase of 9.2% and a heat rate improvement of 2.7% over earlier 6FA machines, to increase efficiency and lower life-cycle costs of power plants.
All of the design improvements for the uprated 6FA were made incrementally, based on proven materials and operating experience. Primary factors leading to the machine's improved performance are increases in firing temperature and airflow, and a higher pressure ratio. These enhancements were achieved by directly scaling GE's Frame 7FA gas turbine, thus migrating the design and the operational experience of the Frame 7 machines to the 6FA.
The 70-megawatt class Frame 6FA is the mid-sized member of GE's F-technology fleet of gas turbines, which has reached more than 8.6 million hours of commercial operation in power plants worldwide. Ideally suited for heat recovery and small combined-cycle applications, the Frame 6FA has proven to be a popular machine in Europe, where 29 of these units have been installed or committed for future projects.
