FEATURE/GE Smart Security Offers Home Protection for Summertime Travelers

May 21, 2003

CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2003--Millions of Americans will hit the road, the rails, or the skies this summer to get away from it all. Some will leave their home's welcome mat out for burglars.

Two out of every three burglaries are residential and homes without alarm systems are more than two times likely to be burglarized. (Sources: www.FBI.gov, Uniform Crime Report Statistics; National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association)

Now, consumers can easily and inexpensively protect their homes while they are away with the GE SmartSecurity(TM) Wireless Do-It-Yourself Alarm and Monitoring System. The GE SmartSecurity is a self-contained wireless security system and lighting control center with the keypad, control unit, and sounder built into one compact enclosure.

The system retails for less than $200 and does not require any wiring or expensive installation.

The SmartSecurity system operates using wireless narrow band radio frequency and various reliable sensor technologies. The basic starter kit includes a control panel, installation accessories, and two door/window sensors, because one study has shown that 80% of residential intrusions occur through the first floor. (Source: National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association.)

If a problem is identified by one of the sensors, the system calls up to three phone numbers, alerting the homeowner with a voice that explains the problem. The homeowner can then decide whether to call 911, or a neighbor, to address the situation. The user can even disarm and control the system over the phone line or with a wireless remote.

SmartSecurity Ideal For Summer Lifestyles

Soccer camp, summer school or special activities can keep school age children busy throughout the day. Now, with the GE SmartSecurity latchkey feature, parents can check from work to know if their children don't arrive home at a programmed time.

Consumers may add up to 24 sensors to their system and an unlimited number of lighting controls. SmartSecurity works in tandem with Smart Remote Plus wireless remote modules to control lighting and appliances in and around the home.

Buy a Smart Remote Plus wireless remote module and wallswitch transmitter for less than $20.00 and start to build your own wireless SmartHome system. Add on to your system with more Smart Remote Plus modules to control all your lights in the house or place in vacation timer mode.

You can even control all your lighting through GE SmartSecurity which uses simple, voice prompted operations. As part of this security and lifestyle system, consumers can also monitor with motion, smoke/fire, carbon monoxide, and water sensors.

Consumers may choose to add to their system other user-friendly sensors and controls (with estimated retail pricing ranging from $8.97 to $99.97) that include:

-- Wireless keychain remote

-- Freeze sensor

-- Motion sensor

-- Garage door keypad/receiver kit

-- And many other options.
