New Delhi, October 21/22, 2005: GE Money, a unit of the General Electric Company (GE), and SOS Children's Villages of India, a non-political and non-denominational welfare organisation, are organising a 'Human Chain Walkathon' on Tuesday, October 25th, 2005 from 10 am to 1 pm in Delhi.
The theme for the 'Human Chain Walkathon' is "Say NO to crackers and YES to joining hands with SOS India to help a child in need". The aim of the 'Human Chain Walkathon' is to spread awareness about the importance of a clean & green environment and the urgent need to help needy children by sponsoring them and gifting them a home and a life of happiness.
Mr. Vishal Pandit, President & CEO, GE Money India said, "At GE Money, one of our key values is Can-Do, our ability to say Yes to people in need. We are extending this core value to our community efforts with our support of the 'Human Chain Walkathon' organised by SOS Children's Villages of India. Through the Walkathon, as with our products & services, our aim is to empower more people to say Yes to happiness."
The Walk will be flagged off by Smt. Shiela Dixit, Chief Minister of Delhi & the Chief Guest for the event, and will be attended by Indian Test cricketer Mr. Anil Kumble and the President of SOS Children's Villages of India, Shri J.N. Kaul among others. Around 5,000 children from 100 leading schools in Delhi will participate in the Walk.
Mr. Pandit added, "Children everywhere are the same. They all want more and many of our loans are designed to allow their parents to give them the things they want with simple and affordable repayment in instalments. Underprivileged children unfortunately are not so lucky. There are a vast number of children in India who are homeless and without any family. Sponsoring a child instead of spending the money on non-essentials such as firecrackers this Diwali, will light up the child's festivities and give immeasurable satisfaction to the donor."
GE Volunteers, the community service organisation of GE, works with several NGOs around the country to support a number of social causes such as from blood donation drives, education with mobile crèche projects, environment-related causes, disaster relief, participation in AIDS-related causes, medicine collection drives, adoption of school for the hearing impaired and computer literacy programs.

SOS Children's Villages of India is part of the worldwide SOS Children's Village movement now in 131 countries and a member of the Umbrella organisation, SOS Kinderdorf International. SOS gives the children, a closest alternative to a natural family i.e. a SOS family where they find a mother, brothers and sisters to grow up with. Within the security of a family, children can grow-up into independent and responsible citizens of the society. A SOS family consists of 9 or 10 children who live together with their 'SOS Mother' in a family home. The Village complex is spread over a number of acres and provides the best of nature and modern amenities. There is a 'Kindergarten' located within the complex for the pre-school children. Other children pursue their education at schools in the local community or at outstation locations depending upon the level and subject area of learning.
