Alliance Pipeline Marks One Million Hours of Operation Using Compression Technology Supplied by GE Oil & Gas

September 15, 2009

HOUSTON, TEXAS -- September 15, 2009 -- Compression packages provided by GE Oil & Gas have completed one million hours of operation at 14 compressor stations located along the 2,311-mile Alliance Pipeline mainline system.

The Alliance Pipeline transports approximately 1.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas from British Columbia and northwestern Alberta through Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa to its terminus in Chicago. GE Oil & Gas has provided all of the compression equipment for the mainline pipeline system, including 16 gas turbine-driven compression systems.

Marking the milestone achievement, Claudi Santiago, president and CEO of GE Oil & Gas, presented a plaque to Jim Walsh, vice president, system optimization, Alliance Pipeline.

"Our successful relationship with GE Oil & Gas dates back to 2000, when we were starting up our pipeline system," said Walsh. "With GE's strong support, we were able to overcome some significant technical challenges and implement solutions in months, rather than years, to get the entire pipeline system into service."

As part of its ongoing support of the Alliance Pipeline, in 2007 GE launched its new PGT25+G4 power turbine technology for an upgrade project at Alliance's Windfall Compressor Station in Alberta. Completed in just three weeks, the upgrade resulted in a significant power increase along with high efficiency and availability, while maintaining a low level of emissions.

"We were the first to use this new technology, which helped to keep our system on the leading edge of the pipeline industry," noted Walsh. "The G4 technology is an example of the type of innovation that differentiates GE from other technology suppliers in the oil and gas sector."

"We are proud that our technology is part of this important pipeline project, which brings natural gas into the heart of the U.S. Midwest," said Santiago. "It is a privilege to work with Alliance, supporting the company's objective to be the most reliable and environmentally responsible transporter of natural gas in North America."
