Aerospace Education Day Encourages Students to Pursue Careers in the Clouds

September 10, 2013

Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation partner with The Boeing Company to spark student interest in aerospace and STEM careers

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 10, 2013 -- More than 200 students learned first-hand about the importance of aerospace to Malaysia's future at today's Aerospace Education Day, an event co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Pusat Sains Negara and Boeing.

"Today's successful event is an example of the type of government-industry partnership in promoting events and programmes that contribute to our nation building and Vision 2020," said YB. Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Minister of MOSTI. "Many young enthusiastic and enterprising Malaysians have chosen to be involved in the airline industry as pilots but Space and Flying could be more than this, and could involve a whole cohort of young Malaysians, providing jobs, vocation, and satisfaction for a whole life-time. At the same time, space and flying may induce and generate the much needed interest in Science and Technology among the young Malaysians."

The event, held at Pusat Sains Negara, featured speeches by distinguished government leaders and Boeing executives; an aerospace career panel staffed by Malaysian aerospace industry representatives; flight demonstrations by The Museum of Flight from Seattle, Washington; and interactive exhibits demonstrating the fundamentals of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) provided by Boeing and its supplier partners on the Super Hornet fighter jet -- General Electric, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.

Boeing co-sponsored the event as part of its Human Capital Development Initiative, an effort with support from GE, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon to work with Malaysia's leaders in creating holistic education and training programs that will benefit the country's aerospace industry.

"Malaysia is taking important strides to ensure its youth become one of the most advanced and competitive future workforces," said Skip Boyce, president of Boeing Southeast Asia. "As a long-time partner of the Malaysian aerospace industry, we are proud to support this effort."

Based on study conducted by MOSTI on Science and Technology Human Capital report, for the country to achieve developed nation status by 2020, Malaysia will need 500,000 science and technology workforce to provide enough human capital.

According to YB. Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, "As the driver of STI, MOSTI will always ensure that STI is given due emphasis and commitment in all planning, policy and strategic undertakings. The National Policy on Science, Technology and Innovation (NPSTI), for instance, has identified the need for Developing, Harnessing and Intensifying Talent and Promoting Sensitizing STI."
