ADVISORY/GE to Announce Most Environmentally Friendly and Fuel Efficient Locomotive in History --(BUSINESS WIRE)-- What: Six years ago, GE Transportation Systems began designing a locomotive in anticipation of EPA mandated emissions regulations for the railroad industry in 2005. GETS met that goal two years ahead of schedule and will unveil the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly diesel electric locomotive ever built on December 23, 2002.
GETS invested more than $200 million and six years of research and development into its new locomotive program. The Evolution's 4,400-horsepower, 12-cylinder diesel engine reduces emissions 40 percent from current locomotives and features a platform that can be upgraded to meet EPA regulations beyond 2005. In addition, the Evolution burns less fuel than any other diesel electric locomotive.
Over 90% of locomotives are freight locomotives, and GE's technology will first be implemented in freight engines. However, this technology can be incorporated into passenger locomotives in the future. Historical Fact: In 1880, Thomas Edison developed the first experimental electrical locomotive. This and other inventions by Edison would lead to the formation of the General Electric Company.
