WHAT: Lighting of the 2002 National Christmas Tree. This is the 40th consecutive year that the Cleveland-based lighting operations of GE Consumer Products has donated the design, lights and ornaments for our nation's tree -- a 50-foot Colorado Blue Spruce.
Material for the 100 hand-fabricated star ornaments was donated by another GE business -- GE Plastics of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
GE's joint venture company, GELcore, of Ohio, donated high-technology, energy-efficient, red LEDs (light-emitting diodes) that have been incorporated into the design, as well as LEDs for the tree topper.
WHO: President and Mrs. Bush will flip the switch to illuminate the tree following the entertainment program sponsored by the nonprofit Washington, D.C., Christmas Pageant of
Peace, Inc., organization.
WHEN: Thursday, December 5, 2002, at approximately 5:50 p.m.
WHERE: On the Ellipse (also called Presidents Park ), which is located between the White House and the Washington Monument.
VISUALS: President Bush flipping the switch that will illuminate the 200,000 GE lights -- an event that officially marks the start of the holiday season in Washington, D.C.
