As early as secondary school, Wafaa Khammar knew she loved mechanical engineering and would be good at it. That passion led her to a university internship in the middle of the Sahara Desert and later to oil and gas fields in Gabon and Chad.
Today, this 44-year-old Algerian is a senior services director with GE Gas Power, responsible for the company’s services and transactional contracts at four power plants located in Algeria.

Emirati Marwa Taymour got her first job after attending an employment fair for recent graduates. No big deal, right? Except, she hadn’t graduated from college. In fact, she hadn’t even started. She was only 16 years old.
“I am very passionate about moving forward, taking new steps. I always ask for more, and am focused on what’s next, what’s the next step,” says Marwa, HR Country Manager in the UAE and Kuwait for GE Renewable Energy.

Reporting GE’s results for 2020 and the fourth quarter today, the company’s chairman and CEO, Larry Culp, told investors that it was hard to think of a tougher year: “Certainly not one any of us will ever forget for its challenges, but even more so, how the world rose to meet them,” he said. He stressed that he was proud of the way GE “persevered in the face of great uncertainty,” did what it needed to do and, as a result, was “set up well for the year ahead.”

As COVID-19 lockdowns spread across the world earlier this year, GE’s Learning and Talent Development (L&D) team for South Asia, Middle East, Africa and Turkey screamed – figuratively – “Who moved my work?”
Prior to the start of the pandemic, this 11-person team spent their time preparing and delivering in-person leadership workshops to GE employees, customers and other partners. The 4 faculty members spent much of their time flying across the region presenting 3-4 days sessions as part of the global core Crotonville curriculum.
