Global experience

A powerful installed base

GE introduced the first HA-class gas turbine in 2014 with the first 50Hz HA in commercial operation in 2016. Now the fastest-growing fleet of heavy-duty gas turbines, our HA fleet of over 50 commercial units has accumulated more than 930,000 operating hours. In total, more than 45 customers have ordered more than 120 gas turbines. Learn more about the benefits of the HA gas turbine fleet here.

Tried and tested

Proven technology

Installing a gas turbine in your plant shouldn’t involve any unknowns. Across our HA fleet, each original turbine is put through a rigorous full-speed, full-load (FSFL) validation test at our Greenville, South Carolina facility. This $200 million investment allows us to push the units beyond real-world conditions—running the turbines at 110% of their rated speeds at load, and replicating the harshest conditions, from the Arabian desert to the mountains of Colorado—all to ensure that our customers have security of supply for their end users.

Combined-cycle efficiency

Cost-efficient conversion of fuel to electricity

Our H-class gas turbines enable the most cost-effective conversion of fuel to electricity to help utilities and independent power producers (IPPs) meet increasing power demands while saving fuel and operating costs and meeting local emissions requirements. Our HA gas turbines have earned two world records for efficiency: one for powering the world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant for EDF in Bouchain, France, achieving 62.22% efficiency on a net combined-cycle basis on a 50 Hz grid; and a second world record for achieving 63.08% gross efficiency on a 60 Hz grid at the Nishi-Nagoya Power Station in Japan.

Simplified modular configuration

Faster installation reduces time and cost

GE’s HA gas turbine auxiliary systems are pre-configured, factory-assembled and tested modules engineered to reduce field connections, piping, and valves. This translates to a simpler, faster installation that requires less labor and reduces field schedule and installation quality risks while improving overall installation times—up to 25% quicker compared to GE F-class gas turbine enclosures. This modular gas turbine configuration also makes it easier for technicians to perform any needed maintenance over the gas turbine’s lifecycle.

Cost-efficient imports to bridge energy gap quickly

Reliable power with liquefied natural gas

The long-term outlook for liquified natural gas (LNG) is positive because of gas availability in the Southern Africa region, international LNG availability, and market innovation in pricing and infrastructure technology. The LNG industry also contributes towards to a decarbonized energy future.

A notable example from GE is the Porto de Sergipe power plant, an integrated LNG-to-power project built on the coastal state of Sergipe in Brazil. The project, which features three 7HA.02 gas turbines, together with a steam turbine and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), is capable of generating 1.5 GW, or around 15% of the Northeast region’s power needs. It is the largest combined-cycle, gas-fired power plant in South America.

The Porto de Sergipe power plant provides more reliable large-scale power for growing communities while enabling Brazil’s transition to lower-carbon energy. Equipped with GE’s record-setting HA gas turbines, the Sergipe power plant gives Brazil extra flexibility to manage its renewable-rich grid, and this integrated approach can be replicated in South Africa.

Hydrogen-ready gas turbines

Global expertise in the use of hydrogen

GE is the world leader in the application of fuels containing hydrogen in gas turbines. Over the last 30 years, our turbines have logged more than 6 million operating hours running on hydrogen with concentrations ranging from 5% to 95% (by volume). This experience has helped GE become one of the world leaders in the application of fuels containing hydrogen in gas turbines.

Enhancing operational performance

Enabling reliable, efficient and profitable operations

South Africa’s successful transition to a new decarbonized landscape will require that plant operators not only have the most efficient technology, but also the right digital tools to help improve performance and drive operational priorities across the fleet, regardless of OEM.

GE is recognized as an industrial software leader, trusted by hundreds of innovative power generators around the world.

With GE’s digital solutions you will be able to:

  • Increase equipment reliability across the plant
  • Enhance your power generation capacity and flexibility
  • Operate in full compliance with the ENISA cyber security initiative
  • Boost the flexibility and productivity of your workforce

Owned by the Sharjah Hamriyah Independent Power Company (SHIPCO), the 1.8 GW Hamriyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) is expected to play a critical role in helping the emirate of Sharjah meet its future electricity demand and is a key component of the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority’s (SEWA’s) 2030 Roadmap to boost installed capacity to 4,600 megawatts. GE is supplying three 9HA.01 gas turbines, three steam turbines, six generators, three heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the power plant and will also provide parts, repairs and maintenance services for various equipment at the site for a period of approximately 25 years.

GE’s HA technology is expected to help make the Hamriyah project the most efficient power plant in the Middle East’s utilities sector once it is complete. Using three GE 9HA.01 units in combined cycle operations can also help SEWA reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 million tons per year, compared to current levels - the equivalent of taking up to 1 million cars off the UAE’s roads.
