Over the next 60 seconds, GE’s energy technology, from gas and wind turbines to hydroelectric, will generate enough electricity to supply millions of households for an hour. In that same time, around 30 aircraft equipped with jet engine technology made by GE or one of its partners will take to the skies — one every two seconds.
Many of the world’s policymakers and major utilities who attended the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference in Egypt last month heard about GE’s LM6000 aeroderivative turbine. GE has shipped 1,300 units to date, and the turbine fleet has clocked more than 40 million operating hours worldwide. The easy-to-deploy LM6000, which is derived from a jet engine, is particularly welcomed in developing countries that need a quick boost in grid capacity.
In the summer of 2021, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) announced that it would be conducting a pilot project to temporarily replace natural gas with a green hydrogen/natural gas blend at its Brentwood Power Station on Long Island, to explore how varying percentages of hydrogen fuel would perform in the power station’s equipment and what the emissions impact would be. According to findings announced in late September, the results so far are very encouraging.
