Engineering Happiness: How GE Employee Harjit Birdi Is Helping Guide The Transition To Renewable Energy

J. B. Kolman
March 29, 2022

Harjit Birdi has been captivated by energy systems since he was a child in India. His father was an official at the State Electricity Board. When the power went down, his dad’s job was to race through town with a crew to find the source of the fault. Despite his mother’s worries, Birdi demanded that his father take him along on his emergency expeditions. A few years later, when it was time to choose his college major, the choice was obvious. “Electrical engineering fascinated me, because energy is something you can’t see,” he says. “You can’t see those electrons.

This One Goes To 14: The Haliade-X, The Most Powerful Wind Turbine, Moves The Bar Again

Tomas Kellner
October 04, 2021

A few years ago, when GE Renewable Energy announced plans to build an offshore wind turbine so powerful it could generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 16,000 European homes, the project began on the desk of GE engineer Vincent Schellings and his team. “We asked ourselves, ‘What is the biggest rotor we would still feel comfortable with?’” Schellings recalls, “and then we pushed ourselves some more.”

Sea Power: Most Powerful Wind Turbine Built To Date Picked For Huge U.K. Offshore Farm

Tomas Kellner
May 19, 2021

GE’s Haliade-X offshore wind turbine was designed to evolve with the market, and evolve it has. The initial model produced 12 megawatts — and even at that level, a single rotation of the machine’s blades could generate enough power for one U.K. household for two days. But when GE Renewable Energy engineers tested a Haliade-X prototype, they found it could be optimized to produce 13 MW. Now an even more powerful version will be rated at 14 MW — and it’s that machine that’s just been selected for Dogger Bank C, the 1.2-gigawatt, third phase of the U.K.’s Dogger Bank wind farm.

Power Move: GE Signs First Contract For The World’s Most Powerful Offshore Wind Turbine In Operation

Tomas Kellner
September 21, 2020

John Lavelle has seen many powerful machines during his nearly four decades as a GE engineer. But none measure up to the Haliade-X, the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine in operation. The turbine set a world record earlier this year when it generated 288 megawatt-hours of electrical energy in a single day. That’s enough to power 30,000 homes in Rotterdam, where the first prototype is located.

Atlantis Is Calling: GE Turbines To Power The World’s Largest Offshore Wind Project

Tomas Kellner
October 01, 2019

Ever since Plato wrote about the lost island of Atlantis, scientists and enthusiasts of every ilk have been searching for it. One location that’s gathered a lot of attention is Dogger Bank, a vast shallow sandbank in the North Sea. Larger than Connecticut, the bank might once have formed a land bridge connecting the U.K. with continental Europe, but disappeared 7,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, when melting glaciers caused seas to rise.
