In 1876, a 28-year-old Thomas Edison came up with what may be his most underrated innovation: a laboratory and machine shop inside a single two-story building in Menlo Park, New Jersey. It’s a place he called his “Invention Factory,” and one that history calls the first R&D facility in the world. While the Menlo Park model was soon adopted by governments, universities, and rival companies, its DNA proved as distinct as it was world-changing, and it led to the birth of GE in Schenectady, New York, in April 1892.

Michael J. Barber didn’t have to look far afield to find his calling. He was just a senior in high school in Wisconsin in the 1970s when he landed an internship at GE Medical System, the forerunner of GE Healthcare. Over the next few years, as his internships and coursework expanded, he began working full time and finished his last two college courses at night to graduate. During the internship before his senior year of college, his colleagues at GE told him not to interview anywhere else and Barber listened.

2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 50th year in which Earth Day was celebrated, a quarter-century since the release of the kids’ movie “Toy Story” and — for good measure — the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. GE marked a few significant milestones as well; none featured Buzz Lightyear, but they did involve some pretty cool aviation technology.
