Telstra Selects GE Network Solutions Applications for Upgrade to Network Planning System

July 30, 2003

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (July 30, 2003) --- Australian telecommunications operator Telstra chose GE Network Solutions' Smallworld Network Inventory™ portfolio of products for its upgraded network planning and engineering system. In a multi-million dollar contract, Telstra will upgrade its incumbent Cable Plant Records (CPR) system to use the Physical Network Inventory product as a platform to plan, design, construct and manage its wireline network.
Dave McCallum, Telstra project director commented, "CPR is an important application within Telstra. It is the database of record for Telstra's physical external plant network and references all outside plant activity to its correct geographic location. Replacement of the existing system with the Smallworld Network Inventory product will support open access to data and will facilitate automated updating from remote Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. This will deliver significant savings into Telstra's service provisioning and maintenance processes."
To implement the new system, Transfield Services will serve as the project's prime contractor and will co-ordinate and integrate a subcontracting arrangement with a team of service providers, including GE Network Solutions and IBM Global Services Australia. Transfield Services is a leading provider of operations and maintenance services to private and public sector organizations throughout Australia. Once operational, the system will deliver higher levels of service integration, improved customer service, enhanced engineering and design capability and operations and maintenance support.
"Telstra chose to use our Smallworld Network Inventory product after evaluating many other applications on the market," said Jim Robertson, general manager, GE Automation and Network Solutions. "Our comprehensive product portfolio was specifically designed to offer an open systems approach in line with the requirements of telecommunications companies worldwide."
GE Network Solutions, a business unit within GE Power Systems, provides software products that design and manage the world's networks. It offers network software solutions to utility, communication and public systems organizations and has more than 900 customers in 44 countries around the world.
