HOUSTON, TEXAS---October 14, 2008---GE Energy has announced the successful implementation of its Bently Nevada™ condition monitoring technology designed for remote and distributed equipment assets, primarily in power generation, oil & gas, and other industrial facilities. The new wireless technology was deployed with Norsk Hydro and Norske Shell A/S for the Ormen Lange gas field in Norway.
With this installation, Norske Shell is now able to monitor the operating condition of a significant amount of plant equipment that was previously inaccessible (in remote locations or difficult environments), as well as assets that could not previously be frequently monitored due to cost or logistical issues. This announcement was made at the ISA Expo conference in Houston, Texas.
GE installed its Bently Nevada wSIMTM wireless condition monitoring system on general purpose compressors and pumps at Ormen Lange in late 2007 to beta test its wireless technology. Based on the positive results of the wSIM sensor---the wSIM sensor is a major component of the Essential Insight™ .mesh solution, also announced today by GE Energy---from early testing, the technology was further refined in collaboration with Shell Global Solutions. Currently, 18 points are deployed on a mix of assets throughout the complex. Using battery or self-powered energy harvesting technology, wSIM sensors are designed to continue to operate without intervention for many years, delivering readings every few hours.
In addition to the wireless condition monitoring solution, GE Energy also supplied a Bently Nevada 3500 condition monitoring system to monitor critical rotating assets, including the installed 50-MW gas compressors and pumps. Both the wSIM and the 3500 connect to System 1®, the industry leading optimization and diagnostic software platform.

"By working together, the solution has taken ease-of-deployment for condition monitoring to a whole new level for us."

Ormen Lange is located in the Norwegian Sea and is Norway's largest gas field. It was developed with seabed installations at depths of between 800 and 1100 meters and is linked to a processing plant on land at Nyhamna in the Aukra municipality, from where the gas is exported. The Ormen Lange gas field is expected to provide customers in the United Kingdom with natural gas for the next 30-40 years. Production at the gas field began in September 2007.
