KUALA LUMPUR, October 14, 2011 -- (NYSE: GE) -- General Electric ("GE") held the first part of its annual GE's Women's Network Summit ("The Summit") today at the Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur as part of its commitment to supporting the empowerment of women in Malaysia. Day two of the summit will take place tomorrow, 15 October, and will see activities organized in association with the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia ("BCWA") to raise awareness for breast cancer in conjunction with "Pink October".
Aptly themed 'Passion, Innovation and Empowerment', the Summit, which seeks to empower women both in their careers and with respect to their health, was officiated by Wan Hasmah Wan Mohd, Director General, Department of Women Development, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. GE also invited esteemed guests to speak at the Summit, including Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and Professor Jamiyah Hassan, Obstetrician and Gynecologist from University Malaya.
"The Malaysian Government has already taken great steps towards empowering women here in Malaysia and the recent budget announcement reaffirms that. GE's Women's Network is committed to doing the same and through events such as GE's Women's Network Summit and programmes such as myConnections, we seek to help women in GE advance their careers and contribute to the success of our business and service to the community," says Sugunah Verumandy, Human Resource Director and GE's Women's Network Hub Leader, Malaysia.
Held annually, the Summit which is organized by GE's Women's Network, brings together female employees from GE's operations throughout Malaysia for a program of educational forums, capability building workshops and networking activities to discuss the issues and challenges faced by today's modern woman and to inspire them in the areas of leadership and innovation. This year, GE has collaborated with BCWA to drive its efforts in fighting breast cancer through raising awareness and ensuring public education. On Saturday, 15 October, approximately 80 GE employees will don pink tee shirts and participate in the "Healthymagination Walk" from Westin Hotel to Lot 10, along Jalan Bukit Bintang. The walk aims to promote breast cancer awareness and will see GE employees distributing educational brochures on breast cancer prevention and screenings to members of the public.
GE is committed to raising awareness and fostering hope in the fight against breast cancer and recently announced a US$100m global innovation challenge that seeks to identify and bring to market ideas that advance breast cancer diagnostics. These diagnostics will help healthcare professionals better understand cancer tumors at the molecular level, allowing for more accurate diagnoses. Through the combination of GE's integrated cancer technologies and the convening of new partners and data sources, GE hopes to discover a new formula for tackling cancer.
"Through GE's healthymagination initiative, GE is committed to developing innovative, consumer-driven healthcare solutions. In Malaysia, we work closely with hospitals across the country, equipping them with GE's Full Field Digital Mammography Systems. With the recent launch of our global open innovation Challenge, GE hopes to play a role in accelerating cancer innovation, focusing on enabling earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments while continuing to increase awareness to the community," says Jitinder Magoon, Country Manager, GE Healthcare Malaysia.
