Bringing The Digital To Industrial: Virtual Reality In The Manufacturing World


Virtual reality became domesticated last year when the VR viewer Google Cardboard arrived for the first time with the Sunday New York Times. Today, it could be used for a large range of things from exploring Pluto’s frigid heart to climbing the top of 1 World Trade Center in Manhattan.


These experiences are thrilling and immersive but are just a playful precursor of what is coming. Companies such as GE have started using VR in many ways to service nuclear power plants, optimise the electric grid, and plan complex supply chains.


For instance, for the past two years, GE engineers in Rugby have been using VR to optimise and even design factories.
