GE Research is leveraging fast data rates, high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and high reliability of 5G communication networks to enable tomorrow’s industry 4.0 applications. In collaboration with Verizon and AT&T, GE Research is operating a 5G testbed on the Niskayuna campus, developing and testing 5G industrial use cases that leverage ultrafast millimeter Wave and sub-6 GHz technology. These include real-time controls of wind farms, wearable sensors for remote patient monitoring, and rapid access of airframe and engine data for predictive maintenance of aircraft.
Ubiquitous 5G connectivity, ultra-low latency, and fast data rates are key drivers for the world’s most demanding Edge applications that will transform the aerospace, energy, transportation, and healthcare industries. We are actively conducting research and development in the following technical areas:
- 4G, 5G, and beyond 5G communication (3GPP)
- Wireless communication (802.1, 802.3, and 802.11)
- Cognitive radio
- Software defined radio
- RF and radio system design
- Network simulation (HFSS, FEKO, NS3, QualNet, OPNET)
- Industrial network stacks (IEC 61850, OPC UA, DDS)
- Multi-access Edge computing
- Distributed computing
- AI/ML at the Edge
- Industry 4.0 applications
