The GE Research team is developing novel optics and photonics technologies for applications in sensing, data communications, imaging, directed energy systems, and energy conversion applications.
In the area of sensing, GE Research has a long history of developing continuous monitoring and control systems based on optical technologies; an area of particular interest is fiber optic sensing technologies & systems.
In the data communication space, GE Research has a history of developing custom solutions using analog photonic links, channel multiplexing, and high bandwidth optical interconnects.
In the area of free space optical systems, the GE Research team works on biomedical microscopes and video borescopes, among other systems. Laser systems are also under development for laser processing and machining of materials.
GE Research also has a strong history of developing world-class solar energy technologies, including record-setting thin film photovoltaics and optical coatings.
The GE Research team is also developing leading edge technologies such as integrated (on-chip) photonics for sensing applications, as well as X-ray optics, nanophotonics, and new devices using plasmonics & metamaterials.
