Taking air travel from the stratosphere to outer space
The future of aerospace engineering is moving beyond this world to the far reaches of outer space. Space travel is not new, but so far very limited in where it can take humans. To go from the Moon to Mars and beyond, the Industry will need new advances in materials science, propulsion, power electronics, avionics thermal management, 3D manufacturing and more to build the future vessels that can safely get us there.
GE scientists, pioneers in commercial air travel, have the broad technical portfolio to meet these future needs. From high temperature materials such as CMCs to new propulsion concepts such as rotating detonation engines (RDE) to high performance computing capabilities that yield new breakthroughs in flight efficiency and performance, we’re developing the technologies that will enable air travel at hypersonic speeds 5X the speed of sound. It’s advances like these that will enable flight to go faster and farther than ever before.
