Tapan Shah

Dr. Tapan Shah is a Senior Scientist in the Machine Learning Lab at GE Research. He has over nine years of experience in using machine learning for optimizing performance, efficiency and reliability of industrial assets and networks. Over the years he has partnered with GE Transportation and GE Healthcare to deploy solutions to real world problems which has created financial value of over $12MM. These include developing engine health digital twins for diesel locomotives and service optimization of CT and MR machines.

His current research interests include using machine learning for solving complex multi-agent optimization problems in constrained environments.  He is also deeply interested in understanding the fundamental information theoretic limits of learnable data. His research has a wide spectrum of applications ranging from data center optimization to wind farm optimization to power grid stability to cyber-security. 

He received the prestigious "5 under 5" award by the GE CTO for technical leadership in the areas of Machine Learning and Signal Processing. Tapan also received the "Best AI Product, 2018" award by GE Healthcare, India.  Tapan has authored 5 granted patents and 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings in the areas of time series, reinforcement learning, signal processing and optimization. Prior to joining GE Research in 2014, Tapan was a PhD scholar (2008-13) at the School of Technology and Computer Science at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He conducted research in signal processing and machine learning for data with low arithmetic precision. Outside of GE, Tapan is an affiliate mentor with Columbia Data Science Institute. He is also a reviewer for several ML and PHM conferences and journals like IAAI, ECML and PHM. He is a contributor to the draft on AI + Climate Change Policy Roadmap for Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) as well as member of IEEE SA committee on sustainability and technology.
