James Miller

PhD, Computer Vision (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) MS, Computer Engineering, Computer Graphics (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) BS, Electrical Engineering (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)

Jim's research traces a path from computer graphics, scientific visualization, virtual reality, computer vision, reverse engineering, industrial inspection, medical image analysis, computer aided detection, image guided therapy, healthcare analytics, remote sensing, to artificial intelligence.

He has worked on a robotic system to inspect composite materials using lasers, inspected the shape of aircraft engine components with cameras, detected early signs of cancer and measured chronic obstructed pulmonary disease with CT imaging, guided minimally invasive cardiac procedures with ultrasound and X-ray, imaged the coronaries of a beating heart with CT, calibrated additive manufacturing machines, and modeled the shapes of buildings and bridges using satellite images.

Jim has spent roughly half of his career working on externally funded programs and – perhaps not coincidently - has spent roughly half his career developing the open source platforms VTK, ITK, and the 3D Slicer.
