Celebrating no Lost Time Injury across the ASEAN region

In the ASEAN region, we continue to build our culture of safety, as one of the core values that drive our goal of transforming and co-creating the future of energy together with our customers. Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) is a key tenet to our approach of how we help customers achieve the right balance between power plant performance and sustainability.

There are various indicators for the EHS performance of a company or project sites. For example, Loss Time Injury (LTI) could be a fatality, permanent disability or time lost from work that could delay project execution, that could lead to lost in time, cost and productivity. This, in turn, could affect the ability of a power plant to operate and generate electricity for communities.

Here in the region, we are making significant strides on No Lost Time Injury (LTI) across the various markets where we operate.

Track 4, Pasir Gudang (Johor Malaysia)

The 1,440 MW combined-cycle power plant, due to begin operations mid-2020, is currently at the installation stage. In the first one and a half years since the commencement of the project, the site has already achieved 6 million man-hours, no LTI. This is a significant accomplishment to achieve in such a short duration which is typically attained over a longer duration, for example, 25 years.

Says William Lee, Project Director, “Together with our EPC partner, CTCI Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd, we have implemented various initiatives to strengthen EHS performance. In addition to rigorous quarterly audits, activities such as toolbox talks, walk-downs, inspections and good housekeeping are implemented on a regular basis as basic hygiene to maintain standards on-site”.

To further enhance performance, personnel commitment is critical, and this is achieved through a Rewards and Recognition program to identify good EHS practices on a weekly basis, as well as a comprehensive training program.

The Track 4 site, will become home to Malaysia’s first GE 9HA.02 gas turbines. The heart of the plant will comprise two generating blocks, each equipped with a 9HA.02 gas turbine, generator and heat recovery steam generator. Overall plant performance will be monitored and enhanced with GE’s Predix asset performance management (APM) software and Fleet360 platform of gas plant solutions.

Tambak Lorok (Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia)

The 780 MW combined-cycle power plant, due to begin operations in mid-April of 2021, is currently in the process of civil works and having its foundations built. In June 2019, the site celebrated 1M man-hours, no LTI. The celebration was attended by site teams; management from the consortium partners of Marubeni Corporation, PT Hutama Karya and GE; the customer, Indonesia Power; as well as local community stakeholders. To further bolster ties with the surrounding community, 50 orphan and children from indigent families were invited as part of the project team’s CSR commitment. To mark the significant milestone and to acknowledge the consortium’s efforts in EHS, a certificate of appreciation was presented by Indonesia Power.

Says Project Director, Ganendra Mahason, “The team takes pride in the efforts driven in collaboration with our consortium partners to strengthen EHS performance. For us, building a culture of awareness and open reporting is key. For example, monthly campaigns on relevant themes are carried out to educate teams on the potential risks throughout the various project stages. Also, we encourage all levels of employees to report potential hazards without fear of retaliation, by submitting Safety Observation Cards. All these efforts will culminate in rectification efforts which is what will ultimately keep our sites and people safe.”

Home to Indonesia’s first 9HA gas turbine, Tambak Lorok will also be equipped with GE’s D650 steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and balance of plant equipment. Once it begins operations, the plant will provide enough equivalent power needed to supply up to 5 million homes, thus ensuring reliable and more affordable electricity for the Java-Bali grid. Being an initiative under the government’s plans of achieving 35,000 MW capacity, the success of the Tambak Lorok CCPP Block 3 project will further cement GE’s contributions to nation-building in Indonesia.
