Variable Inlet Guide Vanes, with EFS
Variable Inlet Guide Vanes (VIGV) regulate airflow into the Low Pressure Compressor (LPC) to optimize turbine efficiency at part loads. Together with the Enhanced Flow and Speed (EFS) upgrade, VIGVs can also increase power at full load.
What Can Upgrading Do for You?
- Increases power output by up to 3.25 MW.
- Improves performance for simple and combined cycle applications at part load and reduces turbine waste heat.
- Lowers Variable Bypass Valve (VBV) flow, reducing associated flow noise.
- LM6000 PC SPRINT turbines with EFS have an average power increase of 2 MW, more than a 2% fuel efficiency increase at 70% power, and an exhaust energy increase of 3%.
- The VIGV closes during large power reductions to quickly reduce LPC flow to maintain stall margin.
How we get you there
- The VIGV assembly is mounted to the front of the Low Pressure Compressor (LPC) and consists of 43 stationary leading-edge vanes and 43 variable trailing-edge flaps.
- Twin hydraulic actuators with Linear Variable Differential Transducers (LVDT) are mounted on the on the actuator ring.
- VIGV position is controlled by continuous measurement of LPC inlet temperature and High Pressure Compressor (HPC) discharge pressure.
- If the turbine has Fixed Inlet Guide Vanes (FIGV), the upgrade involves adding the VIGV module, a new Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU, if applicable), off-engine cables, hydraulic lines, and updating the control software.
- Enhanced, Flow, and Speed (EFS) increases power output by modifying the following:
- Enhanced – Airflow is optimized at part power with the VIGV
- Flow – Increased SPRINT flow to further increase power over the FIGV applications
- Speed – Maximum corrected core speed is increased to allow the turbine to reach higher output in applications when the corrected core speed is the turbine limit
