The growth in renewables and the scheduled retirement of large baseload coal-fired power stations is creating an opportunity for flexible gas-fired power plants and capacity firming solutions. The rise of solar and wind power has led to an accompanying decrease in reliability and security of supply on the grid, and with the Australian Energy Marketing Operator (AEMO) forecasting an increase in load-shedding over the next few years, the need for a dispatchable solution is clear.

Also known as grid firming, capacity firming is a vital characteristic for any power generation system. While renewable power generation sources are now essentially competitive with traditional power generation alternatives, they can have adverse system impacts if they are not carefully integrated into the grid. Wind and solar are typically non-dispatchable and their nameplate capacity does not always align with the required power demand and can’t always respond quickly and effectively to the dynamic needs of the power system.

Aeroderivative gas turbines for grid stability in Australia

Born from aviation technology, GE’s aeroderivative portfolio features highly flexible and mobile technologies for use in a wide variety of applications, including utility generation, district heating, mobile power, fast power, and of course, grid stability. GE’s aeroderivative gas turbines have a wide range of characteristics that makes them exceedingly suitable for capacity firming.

Typical medium-speed reciprocating engines have a ramp rate of about 5 MW/min, but aeroderivative gas turbines have a nominal ramp rate of around 50 MW/min, providing a much faster frequency control response for better grid support. Aeroderivative turbines are designed for high cycling capability, allowing multi-day start/stop cycles.

High part load efficiency, a low minimum load, and deeper turndown all contribute to aeros’ flexibility. Additionally, aeroderivative gas turbines are hydrogen-capable and can operate on a wide variety of fuels, like natural gas, diesel and aviation fuel, but can also be configured to operate on fuels such as naphtha, LPG, ethane, ethanol, bio-diesel and others.

With pro-boost, a short duration power boost, and synch condensing capabilities (and even clutchless synch condensing configuration available), aeroderivative gas turbines are a better choice for grid frequency regulation in Australia.
