As a world leader in locomotive design and innovation, GE Transportation has been a trusted technology partner of choice to Pakistan Railways (PR). Among other locomotives, PR’s fleet includes 30 GE Blue Tigers, two-thirds of which were assembled in country at the Risalpur Locomotive Factory. More recently in June 2015, Pakistan Railways ordered 55 diesel-electric GE Evolution SeriesTM ES43 ACi locomotives. The project supports the Government of Pakistan’s goal to increase the share of rail in transport from 4% to 20% and modernize the country’s transportation infrastructure. One of the most important uses of these new locomotives will be to transport critical supplies of coal, helping the country generate essential power to meet the gap in energy supply and demand.
The Evolution Series Locomotive is the result of a 10-year, $400 million investment by GE Transportation. It is equipped with a 12-cylinder diesel engine that produces the same 4,400 horsepower as its 16-cylinder predecessor and is estimated to be 6% more fuel efficient than its closest competitor in North America. It is an ideal fit for harsh environments such as Pakistan’s and is a part of GE’s ecomagination portfolio, to qualify for which, products must demonstrate both improved economic value and environmental performance.
