The family walks into their house and their jaws drop. Their once cluttered front room, a mess of cast-off exercise equipment, cleaning supplies, and knickknacks, has been transformed into a sleek minimalist dining area. As they continue through the house, each room elicits gasps: the completely remodeled kitchen, with all-new cabinetry, countertops, and appliances; the stylish bedrooms for the kids; the basement man cave with a 75-inch TV and working beer tap. Outside, a crowd of well-wishers is waiting to present the dad with a new motorcycle.

Shortly after he joined GE Aerospace in 1984 as a materials engineer in Evendale, Ohio, Glenn Culbertson received some blunt advice from a senior colleague. “A lot of people will tell you that they’re your customer: your boss, your boss’s boss, the CEO,” the co-worker told him. “They’re all wrong. The customer is the engine. If you do right by the engine, you’ll do right by everybody else.”

Tapping the Lean Machine: How a Jet-Engine-Servicing Plant in Brazil Solved the Puzzle of Missing Spare Parts

Chris Norris
April 05, 2023

Soon after the pandemic hit in 2020, a team of logistics employees at a GE Aerospace plant in Brazil that services jet engines detected something odd, and worrisome: The number of available spare parts, used to repair engines, had dropped dramatically because of a cut in air freight deliveries. And those that did arrive often came in patchwork fashion and wound up stuck on the ground at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport, stalled by lengthy import-paperwork delays. The consequences were potentially serious.

Meyer “Mike” Benzakein used to attract attention in GE Aerospace meetings for a funny habit: At first glance, he appeared to be sleeping. Young engineers would wonder about his focus — until he spoke up with an incisive question.

“He was actually sharply paying attention,” recalls Mohamed Ali, vice president of engineering for GE Aerospace. “He would say only a few words, but his point was very clear.”
