Egyptian LNG Zero Routine Flaring Study awarded to Bechtel-led Coalition for Decarbonization of existing facility

November 14, 2022

Egyptian LNG has awarded a feasibility study contract to the Bechtel-led Coalition for Decarbonization that includes Enppi, Petrojet, Baker Hughes, GE Digital, HSBC and NBE. The study will assess implementation of a zero-flaring system at the Egyptian LNG export terminal (ELNG) in Idku, east of Alexandria. H.E. Tarek El-Molla, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, hosted the signing ceremony during the Decarbonization Day events at COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Easing the Transition: GE Digital Software That Predicts Trouble Is Helping Make Cleaner Energy Possible

Peter C. Beller
October 25, 2022

One day in March, Walid Kodia and his team got an alert about a possible problem in one of the power plants he helps oversee at Tunisia’s state-owned electricity and gas utility, Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG). Gas turbines, which provide most of the power to STEG, are complicated machines that have an array of sensors to tell their operators when something’s off. This alert came from software running at GE Power’s monitoring and diagnostics center in Atlanta, staffed by engineers and data analysts.

On Tuesday at Climate Week NYC, GE Chief Sustainability Officer Roger Martella said that the $369 billion in clean energy and climate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, signed by President Biden in August, are “a game changer” for GE. By “driving energy innovation and security while addressing climate,” the bill puts the company in a position to deploy technologies and innovate breakthroughs to solve the world’s most pressing climate and sustainability challenges.

Good Things in Small Packages: GE Will Invest in South Carolina Hub to Boost Small-Turbine Production

Gregor Macdonald
August 24, 2022

Wind and solar have grown so fast in the past decade that they now generate more electricity globally than nuclear power. But all that clean energy needs a support structure to balance out the hours when the wind doesn’t spin the blades and the sun turns down for the night. One way to support wind and solar growth is through simple-cycle natural gas turbines. Smaller, mobile, and modular, these turbines — often referred to as “aeroderivative” because they are derived from jet engine technology — don’t need to be housed in traditional stationary natural gas plants.

A Bridge To A Cleaner Future: Natural Gas Will Help Australia Cut CO2 Emissions From Coal

Coal-fired boilers have provided global industry with steam and power since the industrial revolution. But today, their high carbon emissions have become a liability. Given their steady and reliable output of energy, replacing them is far from simple. Australia’s Manildra Group, a large family-owned agribusiness, is now lighting the way.

Packing A Punch: GE’s New Gas Turbine To Help Smooth Florida’s Transition To A Solar-Heavy Grid

Chris Noon
June 08, 2022

Florida’s ambitious plans to fully transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy by 2050 make abundant sense for the Sunshine State, and it’s another welcome step forward in the world’s efforts to combat climate change. But it will take some time to build up the state’s renewable infrastructure, and even in its radiant climate, there are times — every night, in fact — when the sun doesn’t shine.

Energy’s Digital Era: How Software Brings More Renewables Online And Helps Make The Grid More Resilient

The energy transition to renewable electricity is gathering speed, with wind farms and solar panels popping up around the world. While renewables help us cut carbon, they have their own challenges. In the absence of grid-scale storage, what happens when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine? The good news is that there are people like Jim Walsh, general manager of the grid software business at GE Digital, who are working on the problem and helping grid operators make sure that our power doesn’t go out. “This problem is way too big for paper and a pencil,” Walsh says.

Engineering Happiness: How GE Employee Harjit Birdi Is Helping Guide The Transition To Renewable Energy

J. B. Kolman
March 29, 2022

Harjit Birdi has been captivated by energy systems since he was a child in India. His father was an official at the State Electricity Board. When the power went down, his dad’s job was to race through town with a crew to find the source of the fault. Despite his mother’s worries, Birdi demanded that his father take him along on his emergency expeditions. A few years later, when it was time to choose his college major, the choice was obvious. “Electrical engineering fascinated me, because energy is something you can’t see,” he says. “You can’t see those electrons.

A Powerful Connection: GE Tech To Bring Electricity To 500,000 New Yorkers From A Giant Offshore Wind Farm

There’s just one offshore wind farm generating electricity in the United States, but things are quickly changing. Several huge wind projects along America’s Eastern Seaboard are already in various stages of development, and the industry is also set to get a multi-billion-dollar boost from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, passed last year.

But placing wind turbines far off the coast is just one part of the engineering problem. Operators also need an efficient way to bring the electricity they generate to consumers on land.
