It is difficult to comprehend the sheer volume of data in the world, but one man who keeps a running tally is Dr. Mathias Goyen, a diagnostic radiologist. He explains that a single mammogram image of the breast contains more data than the physical phonebook of Berlin, Germany — his home country.
“If a problem gets brought up and it isn’t addressed, people just grow apathetic or complacent,” says Nathalie Deney, an engineer in GE’s Operations Management Leadership Program.
In the last half-century, the GE Gas Power plant in Greenville, South Carolina, has experienced the same kind of dizzying roller coaster ride as the city where it’s located. Founded some 200 years ago on the Reedy River, Greenville grew into a textile manufacturing hot spot and a paragon of Southern hospitality — until the 1970s, when the city’s downtown took a turn. Vietnam has an installed power generation capacity of about 55GW and GE helps supply 30 per cent of its electricity needs through its more than 25 gas turbines and seven steam turbines across 11 power plants and other projects throughout the country. These projects enable Vietnam’s economic development and are each a testament to the hard work and dedication of more than 1,800 GE employees throughout Vietnam, including the people who are the boots on the ground from GE’s factories in Vietnam such as Phu My and Dung Quat.
Pat Byrne quickly got to work when he joined GE in July 2019 as the new CEO of GE Digital, the company’s software development unit, which builds applications for the industrial internet of things. He and his team divided the industrial software market into four key segments: the electrical grid, power generation, the oil and gas sector, and manufacturing. Then they visited customers and helped them learn from the data that their machines, power plants, factories and other assets were producing.

GE posted its first-quarter earnings on Wednesday. Reflecting on “a challenging quarter,” GE Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp Jr. said “the world has fundamentally changed” in the eight weeks since he last updated analysts and investors. “This was a challenging quarter for GE, especially in Aviation, where we saw a dramatic decline in commercial aerospace as COVID-19 spread globally in March,” Culp said.
