In early March, Kathy Armijo Etre was managing community outreach as vice president of mission for New Mexico’s oldest hospital, the Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe. The hospital serves as the northcentral New Mexico hub hospital and is assisting with the statewide response to the COVID-19 outbreak amongst Native American populations. In her regular role, Etre set up programs to serve the area’s homeless and care for other vulnerable patients.

The rush to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease caused by the novel coronavirus got a shot in the arm this week, as GE donated a seven-figure gift to the United Nations Foundation to fund treatment and research. “We’re always willing to step up whenever and wherever we possibly can to make a difference in a time of crisis,” says David Barash, the executive director of the GE Foundation — the company’s philanthropic arm.

On Aug. 5, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the mountain village on the Indonesian island of Lombok, leaving behind chaos and rubble. Search-and-rescue teams pulled their first survivor, a man named Hendri, from the ruins of his home as a crowd cheered: “God is the greatest!” Not long after, a 10-year-old girl was found alive and rushed to a local hospital.

GE Foundation announced its final piece of the $25 million commitment to global safe surgery by supporting the expansion of Safe Surgery 2020 into Southeast Asia, with the inclusion of Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The investment plays a vital role into accelerating access to surgical care in Southeast Asia as the region has one of the lowest levels of surgical provision in the world, with 97% of people currently unable to access safe surgical care.

A passing comment by her mum’s coworker turned out to be a boon for young Katrina Williamson, about to finish high school in New Zealand and hoping to study law at the country’s prestigious Victoria University in Wellington. Linda Williamson is a laboratory quality-control technician with GE Healthcare in Tauranga, and a colleague gave her the tip about the GE Star Awards. “After that, I kept an eye out for the emails about them,” says Linda, “but Katrina dealt with all of the application communication, which was quite a process!”
