GE And CFM Win $25 Billion In New Deals At Farnborough Airshow

The Farnborough International Airshow will stay open to the public over the weekend, but the business part is over. GE and CFM International, GE’s joint company with France’s Safran Aircraft Engines, reported a combined total of $25 billion in new business.
CFM entered the show with orders and commitments for more than 10,800 next-generation LEAP jet engines, valued at $151 billion (U.S. list price), and the company won deals for at least 393 more. The company sold 565 engines valued at $8.2 billion. The tally includes its CFM56 engines and also business from undisclosed customers.

Not all jet engines work hard when they’re in the air. Like off-duty pilots flying jump seat, GE sometimes moves its engines in the belly of the massive Antonov An-124 Ruslan freighters operated by the Volga-Dnepr Group. Among the GE businesses that take advantage of the planes' 150-ton cargo capacity is GE Power, which uses them to ship entire power plants to far corners of the world.

Leave It To Software: Here’s How Data Analytics Will Make Airlines Fly Smarter

When the Dubai-based carrier flydubai started looking for new ways to make decisions based on the terabytes of data coming from its planes and pass the savings on to customers, the carrier did something unusual: It sat down with engineers from GE Aviation, the company that makes jet engines for many of its planes. GE has recently invested $1 billion in software and started collecting and analyzing data from passenger jets, power plants, medical scanners and other industrial machines.

We've Watched The World’s Newest Cargo Jet Swallow A Supersonic Car

The most unusual machine at this week’s Farnborough International Airshow in England isn’t a plane at all but a life-size model of the Bloodhound, a jet-powered car vying not only to break the speed of sound but also crash through the 1,000-mph barrier.
Though the car is impressive, the real show-stopper may be its ride: the massive cargo jet that could soon carry it to the racetrack. That plane, a brand-new Boeing 747-8 freighter powered by a quartet of GEnx engines, arrived in Farnborough on its maiden voyage from Boeing’s factory in Everett, Washington.

Every day is a bad day for flying if you hang out with Brian DeBruin. DeBruin runs GE Aviation’s jet engine test operations site in Peebles, Ohio, and his job is to make sure that GE engines keep working when they fly into an hailstorm, encounter a dust cloud or ingest a goose. He and his team even set off small explosions inside jet engines to simulate blade failure.

Just like the tennis tournament, the air show is a grand-slam event for the aviation industry. First the latest news from Guinness World Records: The world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant started producing electricity near the village of Bouchain in northern France today. The plant’s beating heart – an advanced GE gas turbine – can convert more than 62 percent of fuel energy into electricity. For the power-generation crowd, that’s like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the moon or Sir Roger Bannister breaking through the 4-minute-mile barrier.
