Why Less is More for the Health of Africa's Hospitals

August 13, 2014

The rural health clinic in Kimalamisale, Tanzania, sits at the end of a rutted sandy road some 160 miles from the nearest large town. Although the brightly colored concrete structure serves thousands of villagers living in the surrounding savannah, it has no electricity and its main healthcare equipment consists of a stethoscope, weighing scales and a blood pressure machine.

Two out of three people in Sub-Saharan Africa—that’s nearly 600 million people—live today without access to electricity. As incomes and economies grow in Africa, and they are both growing quickly, this will generate massive demand for power access. In Nemba, on the border between Rwanda and Burundi, is a one-stop border post backed by both governments and funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

From a historical perspective, this border is relatively new. It was put in by Europeans and divides two major urban areas, Kigali and Bujumbura, which are only about 100 miles apart.

John Dineen: A Healthier Africa is Emerging

John Dineen GE
August 05, 2014
Delivering high-quality healthcare in Africa is one of the most pressing challenges facing the continent today. Across many parts of Africa, access to appropriate healthcare facilities (hospitals and clinics) and qualified healthcare expertise (doctors, nurses and skilled healthcare workers) is limited.

The numbers are sobering: While only 15 percent of the world’s population lives in Africa, a quarter of the world’s disease burden — a metric used to assess the impact of diseases — rests on the shoulders of the continent.
