If you’ve ever driven by a petroleum refinery, you’ve probably seen a flare stack “on fire.” What looks like shooting flames are the waste gases produced during chemical manufacturing burning off. At the stacks’ mouths, the heat can reach into the hundreds of degrees, and the metal is under constant, intense pressure. The slightest crack or the smallest amount of corrosion in the wrong place could cause a fire that would shut down the plant — not to mention endanger the lives of the people who work there.

Indonesia Jump Starts Rural Electrification Plan

More than four million Indonesian families living in isolated rural, and island locations, will soon have access to reliable, affordable electricity for the first time.
Communities in the remote parts of Lampung, Pontianak, Bangka, Riau, Belitung, Ampenan, Paya Pasir, and Nias provinces, are the beneficiaries of a new energy plan announced by the Indonesian state utility, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) on December 8, 2016.

World's largest floating LNG ship will call Australia home

It’s not unusual to see giant cruise or cargo ships out at sea today. But even by those standards, Shell’s new floating liquefied natural gas facility is huge.
Dubbed Prelude, after the gas field where it will operate off the coast of northwestern Australia, the massive facility is 488 metres long and 74 meters wide. Its footprint is as large as four soccer fields.
