My first visit to Laos in September 2016, coincided with President Obama’s trip - when he became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the nation - and since then, I have always been impressed by the progress being made in the country whenever I return.

1.       What are your expectations on GE growing their investment within Indonesia?  

Indonesia is an important area for us. It’s a country which clearly offers a market for the things we sell, from lighting to locomotives. Currently Indonesia generates about $1 billion in revenue for GE, one of only 20 markets that reach  that figure.

Taken as one economy, it’s $2 trillion GDP makes it the seventh largest in the world, heading towards $6 trillion (and the fourth largest) by 2030. It hasn’t been without growing pains. There is dramatic diversity in the 10 countries in the region. In that diversity lies challenges, but also strength.

One of our colleagues, Bill Bridge, designed a computer interface for Dartmouth that could transfer information from the computer to dumb terminals. They had no memory and no capability of doing computation. These were just input and output devices with keyboards. People could connect between 15 to 20 terminals to one computer and use that for time sharing. GE was one of the first companies to do time sharing and allow multiple terminals to talk to a computer.
