The World’s Largest Jet Engine Starts Certification Testing

Everything that has happened to this point — the hundreds of hours of bombardment with ice, the exposure to dust and debris that simulated 3,000 takeoffs and landings — was just the prelude. In recent weeks, the GE9X, the largest jet engine ever built, has started its certification testing at GE Aviation's bootcamp for jet engines in Peebles, Ohio.

GE's 3D-Printed Airplane Engine Will Run This Year

The last time engineers designed a civilian turboprop engine from scratch for mass-production, humans had not yet landed on the moon. Unlike jet engines, turboprops typically power small commercial shuttles and personal aircraft, but they still represent a multibillion-dollar market. As a result, a new machine created by a team at GE Aviation is now causing a stir.

GE, CFM Expect $15 Billion In New Business In Paris; New LEAP Engines Are Giving A Lift To The Aviation Industry

Low fuel prices and more airplanes in the air are taking us into a new golden age for aviation, according to the mood here at the 2017 Paris Air Show, which starts on Monday. Data from the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) trade group show that the global passenger volume will grow by 7.4 percent in 2017 and the number of planes will increase by 3.8 percent. The typical aircraft is also more than 80 percent full on average. IATA projects total airline profits at $30 billion this year.

GE and Partners Win $19 Billion in New Deals at Paris Air Show

The Paris Air Show will stay open to the public over the weekend, but the business part is over. GE and CFM International, GE’s joint company with France’s Snecma (Safran), reported a combined total of $19 billion in new business.
GE received orders valued at $5.4 billion, including orders for its new GE9X engine, which is currently in development. Testing on the engine is scheduled to begin next year.

Five GEnx engines together generate the same amount of thrust as one Space Shuttle rocket engine. The GIF above shows what that power looks like on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Once again on Tuesday at the Paris Air Show, Boeing test pilots Randy Neville and Van Chaney performed a near-vertical takeoff with the Vietnam Airlines’ 787-9 – an extended version of the Dreamliner.
