The final frontier

December 12, 2013
Scientists have a powerful weapon in the eternal struggle against our smallest, and most deadly, foes: viruses and bacteria.
A new generation of high powered microscopes is making it possible not only to see, but look inside these tiny predators, gaining vital knowledge which will one day help to defeat existing pathogens as well as emerging antibiotic resistant strains of disease.

Flick the switch for an affordable electricity future

December 06, 2013
Guest post by Alex Wonhas
A drink straight from the fridge on a summer’s day, charging our smart phones, and expecting the lights to come on at the simple flick of a switch. The electricity system is central to Australia’s modern lifestyle and day-to-day we rely on it more than we probably realise.

Can a ship travel at the speed of flight?

November 13, 2013
Tasmanian boat builder Incat has tapped the power of jet engines to build the world’s fastest passenger ferry, the Francisco.
The 99-metre catamaran recorded speeds of 107km an hour (58 knots) in recent sea tests using two modified GE gas turbine engines derived from larger Boeing 747 aircraft engines.

At full throttle, the Francisco’s inverted ocean image wake creates the impression of a boat that can fly.

It’s a remarkable feat for a vessel that can carry 1,000 passengers and 150 cars, and boasts a 1,100 square metre duty free shop.

Excess baggage: Designing a lighter jet engine bracket

November 07, 2013
A unique design for 3D printing jet engine parts has elevated Sydney field-service engineer Nic Adams among the world’s best in a competition hosted by GE.
The 3D Printing Design Quest challenged engineers to design lighter, high-performance aircraft engine brackets that can be produced using additive manufacturing techniques.

The loading brackets themselves play a critical role on jet engines, supporting the engine’s considerable weight during periodic handling without breaking or warping.
