The idea of making the world more sustainable also applies to healthcare. On area involves precision health — the idea that treatment can be tailored to individual patients. This helps providers achieve better outcomes for patients, operate more efficiently and eliminate waste.
Aviation accounts for about 2.5% of global carbon emissions. That’s why GE Aviation, CFM International — a 50/50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines — and their airline industry and government partners are working hard to come up with solutions to reduce flight’s carbon footprint. As GE unveils its 2021 Sustainability Report, we looked back at some of this year’s biggest developments, which include sustainable aviation fuel, software that improves efficiency, hybrid electric propulsion, hydrogen fuel and other technologies.
In 2020, GE made a commitment to become carbon-neutral in its own operations by 2030, and the following year the company announced that it is going even further, reaching net zero by 2050 — including the Scope 3 emissions that result from the use of sold products. As the company unveiled its 2021 Sustainability Report this week, we looked back at some of this year’s biggest developments, which include offshore wind, hydrogen fuel, carbon capture and sequestration, small modular nuclear reactors, pumped hydro and other technologies.
Last week, when President Joe Biden spoke at the launch of the new Federal-State Offshore Wind Partnership — set up to speed the growth of the offshore wind industry in the United States — he highlighted the Haliade-X, a powerful turbine developed by GE Renewable Energy to serve customers around the world.
Qantas pilot Captain David Summergreene has spent a quarter of a century flying passenger jets around the world. But his epiphany came while he was sitting at his desk and staring at rows of numbers on a computer screen that illustrated how the Australian national carrier was using jet fuel. “For the first time, I was able to self-service as a pilot to look at some of the most interesting metrics to me, rather than having to go to an analyst and ask, ‘Can I have this information, please?’” he says. “I was just overwhelmed by this; I was like a kid in the candy shop.”
Speaking at the Techonomy Climate 2022 conference in Mountain View, California, on Tuesday, Roger Martella, GE’s chief sustainability officer, wanted to quickly underscore what brought him there: “I think history will look back on this day, this month, this year, and say this was the era of climate innovation,” he said.

It’s well accepted that natural gas power plants are an important part of the energy transition in support of more renewables being added to the grid. They can reliably generate hundreds of megawatts of baseload electricity with a relatively low carbon intensity and quickly adjust their output to match changes in demand and in supply from weather-dependent renewable sources like wind and solar farms.
The northern Appalachian region, covering Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, has helped America tap its energy reservoir over the past 150 years, supplying the country with its first oil and coal. Now the area’s industry is seeking to pivot, lead the country to a lower-carbon future and create new jobs along the way.
