Anything To Declare? This Colossal Wind Turbine Component Has Just Arrived In The UK

August 15, 2019
We may never see a movie called “Blade Runner 2019,” but some of the scenes unfolding in Blyth, a port in the northernmost county of England in the U.K., are worthy of a science-fiction epic. The world’s largest wind turbine blade has just arrived in the town after a nearly two-day voyage through the English Channel and the North Sea from Saint-Nazaire, a port in western France.

Extreme Measures: At 107 Meters, The World’s Largest Wind Turbine Blade Is Longer Than A Football Field. Here’s What It Looks Like

Tomas Kellner
April 18, 2019

How long is the world’s largest wind turbine blade? Stretching 107 meters, the blade is longer than a football field and equal to 1.4 times the length of a Boeing 747. Using a different measure, it would take Usain Bolt, the fastest human and a world record holder in the 100-meter dash, close to 10 seconds to race from its root to its tip. It might also represent one of the largest single machine components ever built. Workers just popped the first one from its mold at an LM Wind Power factory in Cherbourg, France.

A Towering Achievement: This Summer In Holland, GE Will Build The World’s Largest Wind Turbine

Tomas Kellner
January 18, 2019

Rotterdam’s famous windmills, cube houses, and tulip gardens will soon have to compete for attention with a towering newcomer. GE announced plans this week to erect a prototype of the world’s largest wind turbine, the Haliade-X, on the city’s outskirts. The turbine has a rotor that measures 220 meters in diameter — twice the length of a football field — and stretches 260 meters from its base to blade tips. That’s nearly three times the height of New York’s Statue of Liberty, measured from the ground to the tip of the torch.

Proving Ground: This U.K. Facility Is Preparing To Put The World’s Largest Wind Turbine To Test

Dorothy Pomerantz
May 30, 2018
Marc Sala has a huge challenge on his hands. The giant turbine he’s helping bring to market, the Haliade-X, will stand 260 meters tall, about the same height as New York’s iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza skyscraper. With blades that are longer than a football field, the turbine will have a generator capable of producing 12 megawatts — 2.5 MW more than current turbines and enough to supply the equivalent energy needed to supply 16,000 homes.

The X Factor: Here’s What It Takes To Build The Tower For The World’s Most Powerful Offshore Wind Turbine

Tomas Kellner
May 25, 2018
"Some 6 million people from around the world travel to Paris each year to climb Gustave Eiffel’s eponymous tower. Industrial engineer Daniel Castell is now working on a structure that will also reach great heights. An engineering marvel in its own right, chances are that very few people will ever see it — but millions will benefit from it.
