Homerton, the hospital for the London 2012 Olympics, has doubled the size of its service for babies and mums-to-be. Homerton has invested more than £12.5m in the new centre - and a further £4.8m worth of equipment has been donated by GE, a global Olympics sponsor.

British Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis OBE today opened Homerton Hospital's new state of the art Maternity and Newborn Centre.
* Vscan, a pocket-sized, easy-to-use device, for point-of-care imaging, will enable fully trained clinicians in Africa, to increase access to healthcare and help provide more rapid diagnoses by enhancing the physical examination in a rural/urban setting
* The 10 Vscan units will be destined for deployment in selected hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
