GE holds its shareowners meeting in a different city each year to illustrate the diversity of the company's businesses and the strength of its portfolio.

But MIT's Charles Forsberg has come up with a much more ambitious idea: He proposes marrying a nuclear power plant with another energy system, which he argues could add up to much more than the sum of its parts.

A public works facility security camera in North Liberty, Iowa, caught this meteor at around 5:43 p.m. local time on Dec. 26. Observers across Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska reported seeing the fireball as it streaked from east to west across the Midwestern sky.

This composite image of a single-celled freshwater algae took third place in the 2013 Olympus BioScapes digital imaging competition. Dr. Igor Siwanowicz, a neurobiologist with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, took the image of the symmetric microbes within a family of eukaryotic green algae called desmids.
