The project is part of a larger effort to strengthen the inter-regional power transfer capability in Brazil and ultimately help alleviate power shortages in the Brazilian North-Eastern regions.

Under the contract, valued at US$43 million, the first unit is scheduled to be shipped in the first quarter of 2004, with commercial operation set to begin during the third quarter of that year. The equipment will be manufactured at the GE Oil & Gas facility in Florence, Italy.
