Year In Review: The Silver Anniversary Of An Aviation Giant And More Milestones

GE Reports Staff
March 17, 2021

2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 50th year in which Earth Day was celebrated, a quarter-century since the release of the kids’ movie “Toy Story” and — for good measure — the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. GE marked a few significant milestones as well; none featured Buzz Lightyear, but they did involve some pretty cool aviation technology.

Aerospace engineer Pooja Choudhary still remembers her first plane ride. The Mumbai native was 11 years old when she joined her class on a school trip to Jaipur, one of India’s top tourist destinations. But the city’s famous pink palaces weren’t what piqued Pooja’s interest. She was in it for the plane ride. “When I was in school, watching planes fly overhead would fascinate me and inspire me to dream high,” she says. “I still remember how the whole aircraft cabin felt so huge and the view outside so liberating.”

Power Up: New Substations Are Helping Close The Electricity Gap In India

Virginia Citrano
November 13, 2019
Located in the Indian state of West Bengal, Ramnagar is a small town just a few miles from quiet beaches and windswept dunes lining the Bay of Bengal. While those nearby coastal towns (some 100 miles southwest of Kolkata) attract beach-loving tourists, they’re nowhere near as popular as other Indian beach destinations, such as Goa. One of the reasons: The area doesn’t have reliable electricity.

To Infinity And Beyond: These Crystal Sensors Can See Blasts From Black Holes And Also Cancers

Brendan Coffey
August 19, 2019
In the 1960s, satellites monitoring Soviet nuclear tests noticed huge, curious flashes of radiation. Rather than coming from the ground below, they were arriving from deep space. After decades of study, these rapid flashes of the most energetic form of radiation — known as gamma ray bursts or GRBs — remain one of the biggest mysteries of the cosmos. Scientists believe they could be powerful burps emanating from black holes after they lunched on a large star, or they could be caused by a handful of other extreme events taking place across the universe.

Sensors And Sensibility: This Engineer Found A Way To Keep Pipelines Healthy At The World's Largest Refinery

Tomas Kellner
August 11, 2019
For the world’s largest facility of its kind, Reliance Industries’ oil refinery is surprisingly hard to find. Built on the vast alluvial plains surrounding Jamnagar, a town in the northwestern Indian state of Gujarat, the refinery is flanked by thick mango groves, tree-lined private highways and a pristine company town called Reliance Greens that holds homes, parks, schools and other facilities for some 2,500 employees and their families. The massive industrial monument only slowly emerges from behind the green curtain.

Everything Is Illuminated: This Mile-High Marvel Is Keeping The Lights On In India’s Frozen North

January 25, 2019

Not so long ago, large parts of India used to be dark in satellite pictures of Earth at night. But now they twinkle with hope. In fact, the Asian country’s rapid electrification is one of the greatest development stories ever told, with around 500 million Indians gaining access to power since 2000. Most people no longer need to rise at dawn or eat by candlelight.

Zapping Blackouts: India Is Giving Its National Grid An All-Seeing Eye

P D Olson
August 27, 2018
Deepak Pandey still remembers the chaos of the world’s worst electrical outage. At 1:02 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, millions of people across India suddenly found themselves waiting for hours on paralyzed trains or stuck in elevators when power went out for half of the country’s 1.3 billion inhabitants across 22 states. Traffic snarled across the capital New Delhi, backup generators ran out of diesel and the water supply became tainted because pumping stations had no backup systems to counteract the unprecedented outage.

Guiding Light: This Software Is Helping Modernize New Delhi’s Power Grid

Fred Guterl
June 18, 2018

Dust storms are a fact of life in northern India, but this spring the damage has been the worst in two decades, according to the BBC. In early April, a storm brought traffic to a standstill in New Delhi and sent pedestrians scurrying for shelter.

Power Up: This Speedy 850-Mile Energy Highway Will Ship Electrons To Millions Of Indians

Dorothy Pomerantz
February 20, 2018

There are a number of villages in northern India without reliable access to electricity. If entrepreneurial residents want to start a business, like repairing shoes or selling new farming equipment, they have to do it during daylight hours or by the light of kerosene lamps. And forget about using the internet to take orders, receive payments or order new inventory. Other ways of reaching customers also pose challenges. Without power, the only way to charge a cellphone often involves waiting in line at a solar panel or diesel generator.
