Fully integrated process control system will be used to automate 16 MW bagasse-based cogeneration captive power plant
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, NOVEMBER 19, 2009 GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced that YM Krishna SSK has chosen its breakthrough process control system, Proficy® Process Systems to control and automate its captive power plant located in a remote area of Western Maharashtra, India. The captive power plant is a 16 MW cogeneration plant that will take bagasse from a sugar mill and provide energy back to the total plant. YM Krishna SSK is "going green" by utilizing the waste from the mill and carbon credits to provide surplus power back to the market.
The project at the YM Krishna SSK captive power plant is part of a Government of India initiative channeled through MITCON Consultancy, an agency under the Ministry of Renewable Energy that specializes in Power Generation, Sugar Agriculture, and Biotechnology to build commercially viable renewable energy sources. The sugar mill is at the center of development in this rural area providing for construction of irrigation, bridges, dams, and roads, as well as bringing education and healthcare to the area.
Proficy Process Systems is a state-of-the-art, scalable, fully integrated system for process automation and control. With an open and scalable architecture, it leverages the best of GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms' broad hardware and software platforms to provide a system ideally suited for Captive Power Plant control. The YM Krishna SSK implementation includes a boiler supplying steam to a 16 MW Turbine, with approximately 2,000 I/O. The system architecture consists of High Availability Redundant PACSystems RX3i controllers with an engineering workstation and operator console.
"GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms has a long heritage with captive power plants and in the global sugar industry," said Steve Ryan, General Manager of GE Fanuc's Process Solutions business. "Our proven track record in the industry as well as the region, coupled with the leading edge technology of Proficy Process Systems, clearly met the needs of YM Krishna SSK, now and in the future.
The flexibility and robust nature of Proficy Process Systems provides the company with the ability to measure and analyze various operations within the plant including steam, power and water consumption, production efficiency, molasses output, steam generation, fuel quantity, and water quality and quantity. In addition, YM Krishna SSK is able to work toward optimization of the workforce within the plant.
"Our goal with automating the plant is to make sure we are positioned correctly for expansion of the sugar plant, power and the distillery," said Dr. Indrajeet Mohite, Chairman of YM Krishna SSK. "We wanted a control system to reduce startup time and production downtime. In addition, we wanted intangible benefits such as improvement in energy efficiency and sugar quality and less dependence on human factors, as well as easy expandability to a production management solution with connectivity to an ERP system. Proficy Process Systems and its ability to seamlessly integrate with Proficy Production Management solutions will provide us with that capability."
Proficy Process Systems provides a single control environment and comprehensive engineering and operator functionality in a very user-friendly system. Its open architecture reduces lifecycle cost through precise calibration and secure electronic configuration. Single Point change management eliminates the risk of inconsistencies between multiple databases and need to duplicate engineering efforts. And, real time monitoring of plant and an intelligent alarming system provide overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of production equipment efficiency and critical plant conditions.
"The Proficy Process System High Availability RX3i controller, I/O and forward-thinking architecture of 100 MBPS I/O Rack Connectivity will enable us to reduce time to decision and increase our productivity," concluded Mr. Mohite.
