GE in India celebrates Pride Month

For more than 25 years, GE India has maintained an intentional focus on inclusion and diversity. Our efforts have culminated into a culture where individual differences are respected, diverse talent has equal opportunities, and the best ideas win, irrespective of gender, race, or disability.

At GE, inclusion and diversity are essential to who we are, what we believe and how we operate. In South Asia, our commitment is spearheaded by a cross-business and cross-functional group called 'GE South Asia Inclusion and Diversity Council.' The council works towards identifying improvements in our processes, practices, and people behaviors across three pillars - gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities with a strategic application of 'Lean' principles.

To further diversity in the field of engineering, the GE Foundation runs 'Next Engineers', a program that seeks to create diverse innovators and leaders of the future.

While the road to inclusion is long, we have made progress and are committed to continue to invest in this journey.

Gender diversity

We value a diverse workforce for the unique perspectives that people of different genders and backgrounds bring to work. To enhance gender equity, we conducted a study with IDE consultancy, Avatar, on 'Women's employment in Manufacturing, Operations and Engineering Services Sector' in India in 2021 to find out the core issues and build resolutions to reduce the gap.

Sukla CHandra

Led by the insights, we are actively taking measures to internalize gender equity by sensitizing employees about unconscious biases and providing training to root them out from the system. We are also progressively building inclusive leadership capabilities, creating more growth opportunities for women through upskilling programs and networking, and offering work-life balance through flexible working support and childcare facilities. We also look to encourage young girls to explore STEM careers through the GE Girls initiative. We are committed to pay parity and offering an equitable workplace.

International Women’s Day 2023 - meet GE allies who're making our workplace & communities more inclusive and equitable.

LGBTQI inclusion

We believe in empowering people and respecting them regardless of how they identify. We encourage our people to be their unique selves, enabling them to tap their true potential and feel they belong. We support LGBTQAI+ communities and their allies through The Pride Alliance project that helps in building initiatives to strengthen the feeling of security and create equitable opportunities for prosperity.

Moments from our Pride Month celebrations

Pride Month celebrations in June 2023 were even bigger and brighter, showcasing the spirit of inclusion and diversity at GE. In a vibrant show of support for the LGBTQ+ community, over 1,600 colleagues from 12 campuses across India united for Pride Walks.

Abilities and accessibility

We are committed to mend accessibility barriers through our Disability Advocacy Network (DAN) that helps persons with disabilities tap into their potential by advocating unbiased hiring and a supportive work climate. Our infrastructural and cultural support is aimed at reducing any inequity in career advancement as we believe that accessibility at every level of work and society is the path to a better tomorrow.

First GE South Asia Disability Advocacy Network (DAN) Summit

General Electric

The GE South Asia Disability Advocacy Network (DAN) organized a three-day DAN summit in December. Our Global Aviation Operations Leader, Kranti Tata, kicked off the event along with Sukla Chandra.

The event saw a lineup of engaging conversations with external and internal speakers. These included Sudha Chandran, Vidya Doraiswamy, and Vineet Saraiwala. They spoke about the importance of leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward building an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.

BELONG – Inclusion, Diversity & Equity Conclave 2022

At GE, BELONG has been a platform to discover new frontiers in inclusion, diversity and equity. The conclave provides a forum to learn from ID&E thought leaders and gain insights from inspiring stories of inclusion and beyond.

This year was special with several key events:

- Belong kickstarted with a welcome address by Brandi Thomas, Chief Diversity Officer and Chief Audit Executive for GE highlighting how ID&E will remain priorities in GE’s plans to form three new public, industry-leading, and investment-grade companies.

- We had an insightful conversation with Bollywood actor, social activist and filmmaker Nandita Das and Tamanna Inamdar, Senior Editor, ET Now-Mumbai on how unconscious bias affects diversity and inclusion at the workplace.

- Paarul Chand, Girish Balachandran, Kanika Agarwal and Neerja Bhardwaj joined in for a panel discussion on mental wellness at the workplace.

- Over 300 students from IIT Madras and NIT Trichy participated in an event specially designed for their campuses. The students discussed careers in STEM and the experiences of working at GE in India with GE leaders.

- An 'Idea-a-thon' brought forth new ideas to create a diverse and inclusive workplace.

The themes for the discussions at BELONG 2022 are reflective of the growing need for organizations to reimagine their approach to the ID&E journey.
