Challenge:

Given the extreme volatility in the Oil & Gas market, a global Oil & Gas company was operating as leanly as possible.  As such, the company was unable to monitor hundreds of sensors for each turbine on a daily basis, causing equipment maintenance problems to go unnoticed. 

Solution:

Operating like a fleet of attentive engineers, SmartSignal detected increased vibrations and began remotely monitoring this issue while briefing the customer during weekly calls.  Rather than waiting until a hard alarm was tripped at the plant that would have induced reactive maintenance, the Availability & Performance Center presented the customer a set of potential root causes to explain the increased vibrations and suggested proactively scheduling a borescope inspection of the turbine to identify which cause was, in fact, underlying.  The customer conducted the inspection during a maintenance outage that had been otherwise planned and, as a result, discovered damage to equipment.

Results:

The customer was able to repair the damaged equipment during a further planned maintenance outage, thereby eliminating the risk of equipment failure, a scenario which could have caused tens of millions of dollars’ worth of lost production.
