• GE and Brazil’s Canoeing Team Create App that Leverages Big Data Analytics to Optimize Athletes’ Performance

Without the ability to monitor and collect real-time feedback from the canoes and from the athletes, teams in the Brazilian Canoe Federation (CBCa) were missing an opportunity to optimize performance. The process for collecting data and performing basic calculations for training was manual, and athletes and coaches sought better data-based insights to make critical adjustments in their strategy.

Through a strategic partnership, the GE Global Research Center (GRC) in Brazil and the CBCa developed an innovative app to help analyze and drive real-time improvements in athletic training. Having built Predix—the operating system for the Industrial Internet—GE applied its big data knowledge and expertise in the development of the app, which collects and processes real-time data through sensors that are placed on the canoes and athletes.

The sensors connect to data such as paddling frequency, intensity, speed, location, and heartrates for collection and analysis, which is displayed in a dashboard via a tablet. As an edge device, the tablet includes some self-contained process capability and its connectivity to the cloud enables broader transmission and analysis. Both coaches and athletes can gain better visibility into critical insights, and take the actions they need in real time to optimize performance.

Providing greater speed and precision, the app has changed the mindset of Brazil’s canoeing teams. The coaches and athletes have experienced the benefits of applying real-time data analytics to improve training and enhance performance results. As the teams continue to use the app going forward, it is hopeful that the technology will allow future athletes to drive peak performance.
