What did GE's analytics software find?
In July, GE's SmartSignal solution detected a high seal gas filter differential pressure on a centrifugal compressor at an upstream oil and gas facility. The seal gas filter DP increased from ~0.57 barg to ~0.84 barg in a period of about 2 weeks. GE’s Industrial Performance & Reliability Center (IPRC) alerted the GE Rotating Equipment Engineer via a Rapid Response notification.
What was the underlying cause?
Following a compressor outage on an offshore platform and subsequent restart, the dry gas seal supply filter differential pressure started increasing at a significantly higher rate than before the compressor outage due to filter clogging.
What was the value to the customer?
Based on the notification from the Rapid Response Team, the customer was able to take immediate action to switch the filter to ensure an uninterrupted supply of seal gas to the compressor seals. If the seal gas supply was interrupted, there could have been a possibility of seal damage and a subsequent safety or environmental hazard associated with the leakage of process gas to the atmosphere.
