Reaching New Heights

"Team
I would like to share with you a great story I heard from Januario Dolores, our Hydro Latin America leader. A little more than a year ago, Cristiano Muller – one of our project managers in LAM - decided to take a year off to make one of his dreams come true.

It was not a childhood dream that he had prepared for years. It was a dream he got one day of his
adult life climb Mount Everest. Nothing more, nothing less.

He had some climbing experience of smaller challenges but was not following any special training. One day, he just decided that it was going be his new goal. Needless to say that his ambitions were high… maybe too high as some of his family, friends, and colleagues suggested? The fact is that generally only super trained mountaineers attempt to climb Everest, and many fail. A fact that wasn’t enough to distract Cristiano from his new objective.

On the very first day on his sabbatical year, he got up at 5 am to start his physical training. He knew he could not afford to lose a single day, or a single hour of his yearlong preparation. Discipline, courage and will were his guiding principles to which he added a good dose of dreaming and optimism.

He started by climbing medium size mountains, such as Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Denali and the Mont Blanc. And before he knew it, D DAY was upon him. On March, 22nd he started his journey to conquer Mount Everest. It took him 60 days to reach the top, but he made it! 365 days of physical preparation and 40 minutes of pleasure and satisfaction on the top of the world.

What does this story tell us? It shows us that when set your mind to it you can achieve the impossible, it certainly takes time and effort, but with the will to succeed the sky is the limit.

What I like in this story, is that it somewhat relates to what we are living this year in the Hydro business. At the beginning of the year, we were at the bottom of the hill. But since then, we have been working hard, building our muscles, getting stronger, passing milestones one after the other, succeeding and failing, feeling doubt and yet remaining laser-focused on our objective all through the journey: becoming the leader of the digital industrial hydro industry. I strongly believe that if we have the ambition and the will it takes to get there, we will succeed and we will prove to our stakeholders – internal and external – that we deserved their trust. "
