About

Australia has been part of GE’s story for almost 125 years. Operating in Australia since 1896, GE started out providing infrastructure for Brisbane’s tramway and the Pyrmont Bridge in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, one of the longest bridges in the world when it opened in 1902.

 

As Australia’s economy has grown and expanded, so too have GE’s operations in Australia evolved. Today Australia is an increasingly important country for GE, with 1600 employees and contractors across every state and territory in Australia, working across some of the most important sectors of the economy. For example, GE is one of the biggest partners of the Australian Defence Force, Australia has one of the highest aircraft per capita ratios in the world, and GE’s diverse portfolio of power generation products and services covers all areas of energy sector.

 

In Australia, GE’s world-class technology now provides:

·         90 per cent of the software running Australia’s electricity grid.

·         70 per cent of Australia’s domestic flights are powered by GE engines.

·         70 per cent of all surgery in Australia is anaesthetised with GE equipment.

·         1.8 gigawatts of wind farm capacity under construction or in operation across Australia.

·         One third of MRIs, x-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, clinical monitoring systems and digital imaging systems to healthcare providers in Australia

Businesses

GE operates across a number of business sectors in Australia:

Aviation: GE supplies commercial aircraft engines to a majority of local carriers, including Qantas, Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia and Regional Express. GE makes it possible for Qantas to fly further and faster by powering the Perth to London route, the longest flight from Australia while Jetstar’s new fleet of narrow-body A320neo aircraft are powered by GE’s LEAP-1A engine.  

We also supply the Australian Government with safe, strong and dynamic engines and systems for military and marine use, and Australian airports have led the way globally in adopting GE’s ground-breaking performance-based navigation systems.

GE maintains a strong commitment to Australian Industry Capability, with for example, 85 per cent of F414 repairs and more than 90 per cent of F404 repairs now undertaken in Australia.

  • Commercial Engines and Services: As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of large jet aircraft engines, our product line continues to make advances in fuel efficiency and reliability. This includes the breakthrough LEAP engine, manufactured by CFM, a 50:50 joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines (SAE) of France and GE, which will soon power Jetstar’s 109 Airbus A320-neo aircraft. We also manage service support for all our engines, an increasingly important service for the growing number of low-cost operators looking for on-time reliability and safety without internal maintenance overheads.
  • Military Engines and Services: GE engine technology powers Australia’s frontline combat aircraft, VIP transports, tankers, and surveillance fleets as well as warships. GE provides turnkey solutions, through life support of its engines, ensuring uncompromised operational capability to Australia’s military forces. As an example, the total logistics support provided by GE for the F404 and F414 engines is valued at more than A$1 billion.
  • Aviation Systems and Services: From cockpit displays and onboard computing in Hawk jet trainers to composite bladed Dowty propellers on both military and civil aircraft to the most technologically advanced avionics and computer systems, GE has a significant presence in aviation in Australia. These systems are serviced in Newcastle, Richmond and Brisbane – the largest GE Aviation Systems facility in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Flight Efficiency Services: GE technology has moved aircraft navigation from ground-based controls to the air, saving time and fuel with safer systems that allow planes to land in challenging weather and terrains, while producing less noise. These systems are already in use in six airports around Australia, and GE works with airlines to integrate specific procedures unique to their aircraft.
  • Business & General Aviation (BGA): BGA Turboprops is a recognised leader in the design, development and manufacture of turboprop engines. With more than 1,600 turboprops in service and more than 17 million flight hours to date in Australia, BGA Turboprop engines have a proven record of performance and reliability in extreme conditions.

 

Healthcare: Harnessing data and analytics across hardware, software, and biotech for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients, GE Healthcare is our $19 billion healthcare business. As a leading provider of medical imaging equipment with a 100-year track record and more than 57,000 employees across 160 countries, we transform healthcare by delivering better outcomes for providers and patients.

Building on its many industry-defining innovations, GE has changed the way patient care is delivered including:

  • Advanced diagnostic imaging, such as the first handheld, pocket-sized color ultrasound device; a unique dual-energy computed tomography CT technology that produces images that can more precisely characterise a range of pathologies; and the first imaging agent for the evaluation of clinically uncertain Parkinson’s Disease.
  • Critical Care Suite, a collection of artificial intelligence algorithms embedded in a mobile X-ray device, that prioritise critical cases for pneumothorax, a type of collapsed lung.
  • Senographe Pristina with Dueta, named one of TIME Magazine’s 2019 Best Inventions as the world’s first mammography system to offer a patient-assisted compression device, giving patients a sense of control during their mammogram.
  • Design and development of 11 Clinical Command Centres across the world that take data from 49 hospitals to improve workflows, reduce patient waiting times, increase bed capacity and better patient outcomes.
  • GE Healthcare’s Edison platform, now open to developers and health systems to build on to integrate their technology seamlessly into cutting-edge products and seize opportunities to reduce waste and increase efficiency across the healthcare industry

In Australia and New Zealand, we capitalise on GE's global scale with the world's largest installed base and $US1 billion investment in research and development in medical imaging, monitoring, biomanufacturing, and cell and gene therapy technologies. Our devices, data analytics, applications and services help diagnostics, therapeutics and monitoring.

We are extensively involved in research collaborations across industry, government and academia, with almost $100 million in partnered research projects. For example, we recently announced a new research collaboration with Fujitsu and Macquarie University to diagnose and monitor brain aneurysms on scans faster using artificial intelligence. GE is also supporting a new $11 million biotech training facility at the University of Technology Sydney to create an environment for both startups and established companies to scale and refine their processes and bring advanced therapies and personalised medicines to market faster and more efficiently.

Power: From our beginnings when GE installed an electric motor to open the Pyrmont Bridge in Sydney, we have endeavoured to advance technology to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of power. GE Power creates the energy technologies of the future and improves the power networks that we depend on today. We create a third of the world’s electricity and our technology equips nine out 10 power transmission utilities worldwide. Distributed power provides customers with the ability to generate reliable, sustainable power whenever and wherever it is needed.

  • GE joined an Australian Government-backed initiative to develop carbon capture and storage power plants worldwide, becoming a founding member of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (GCCSI). The Institute provide international policy and management oversight with a goal of delivering commercial-scale CCS plants.

 

GE's Power Conversion business applies the science and systems of power conversion to help drive the electric transformation of energy infrastructure. Designing and delivering advanced motor, drive and control technologies that evolve today's processes for a cleaner, more productive future in the energy, marine, industry sectors.

Gas Power

GE Gas Power engineers cleaner, more accessible energy that people depend on, powering growth and prosperity. Natural gas-fired power generation plays a vital role in our cleaner energy future and GE is taking actions to ensure we’re best positioned to meet these needs. GE is the industry leader in gas turbine technology, with our industry-leading HA gas turbine the world’s fastest-growing.

 

At GE, we are committed to supporting the Australia Government’s goals of strengthening renewable energy generation beyond 24 per cent. We have the right technology, domain expertise and experience to provide cleaner, more accessible energy that Australia can depend on to power growth and prosperity. Gas technology will have a complementary role with renewable energy, particularly with grid stabilisation.

 

In Australia, we recognise the need for fast and modular power especially in off-grid operations/ sectors such as utilities, mining, oil and gas. GE’s aeroderivative technology provides customers with fast start up, increased flexibility and lower emissions. Our land mounted and truck mounted aeroderivate gas turbines combined with battery storage capabilities deliver customised lower megawatt power solutions to a variety of applications.

 

In Australia, our we aeroderivative units serve the utilities, mining, oil and gas industries. Our largest fleet is the LM2500 turbines and we operate and service aeroderivative gas turbines for Rio Tinto, Minara Resources, Power & Water Corp, Todd Energy and Verve Energy.

 

  • In 2017, GE announced plans for its TM2500 mobile gas turbine generator sets to provide new generation capacity ahead of summer in South Australia. The announcement followed engagement between GE’s fast power alliance partner with the South Australian Government to bring GE’s technology to the region. The agreement included nine GE TM2500 units - owned by our channel partner – that provide more than 250 megawatts of power to South Australia. The mobile and trailer mounted TM2500 can be commissioned in days and can ramp up to full power in eight minutes to support grid security during periods of high electricity demand in January 2019. In addition to seasonal requirements as experienced in South Australia, energy companies are increasingly considering temporary solutions as part of capacity planning over longer timeframes.

 

Within our Gas Power business, GE’s Energy Consulting team has established a presence in Australia with a team of electric power system specialists to provide innovative solutions across the entire spectrum of power generation, delivery, and utilisation.

Renewable Energy: While GE’s portfolio of power assets covers all areas of the energy sector, our focus on cleaner power with lower emissions is increasingly important, particularly in Australia. Innovative energy solutions are gaining greater attention from governments, business, industry and the community. GE is committed to supporting Australia achieve its renewable energy goals while maintaining reliable and affordable electricity supply to businesses and households across the country.

 

GE has the world’s second largest fleet of wind turbines and offers market-leading reliability and efficiency of conversion of wind power into electricity. We have constructed or are building over $[2.5] billion in wind farm projects in Australia, representing 1.8 gigawatts of generation capacity.

  • In Mumbida in Western Australia, we’re helping Verve Energy harness the wind to power 50,000 homes every year with 22 of GE’s 2.5MW wind turbines.
  • Commissioned in 2015, Boco Rock Wind Farm, near Cooma in NSW, has 67 1.6 and 1.7MW wind turbines, with a total capacity of 113MW, enough to power 50,000 homes.
  • GE Australia joined a global consortium to deliver the Ararat Wind Farm in 2015.  GE has supplied 75 wind turbines to the $450 million development. With a life span of 25 years, the 240MW Ararat Wind Farm will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of around 123,000 homes a year, or six per cent of Victoria’s households.  GE was involved in financing the project, which was the first to proceed under the recalibrated Renewable Energy Target (RET).
  • In collaboration with AGL Energy, GE built the $450 million Silverton Wind Farm. The Silverton Wind Farm is the first greenfield development under the Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF), a partnership between AGL, QIC and the Future Fund for the development of approximately 1,000MW of large-scale renewable energy projects. The Silverton Wind Farm generates 780,000 MWh of energy annually, enough to power 137,000 average Australian homes.
  • In 2017, GE secured an agreement with Global Power Generation Australia to supply and install 28 3.4MW 130-metre rotor wind turbines  the 91 MW Crookwell 2 Wind Farm near Goulburn in NSW. The wind produces 300,000 megawatt-hours a year with zero carbon emissions, an energy supply to power 41,600 Canberra homes.
  • GE delivered 32 wind turbines at ENGIE’s Willogoleche Wind Farm in South Australia, 160km north of Adelaide in 2017. The 119 MW wind farm project generates enough energy to power 80,000 South Australian homes.
  • In 2017, GE worked with the Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF) to supply and install 123 wind turbines for the Coopers Gap Wind Farm at Cooranga North, Queensland. The $850 million investment will have a capacity of 453 MW and produce around 1.5 million MW of renewable energy each year, enough to power more than 260,000 average Australian homes and reduce CO2 emissions by almost 1.2 million tonnes a year. When completed in 2020, Coopers Gap will be one of Australias largest windfarms.

  

GE Digital: We are transforming how industry solves its toughest challenges by putting industrial data to work. Through our modular software applications, GE helps businesses analyse and improve their processes to bring simplicity, speed and scale to digital transformations. Grid optimisation – through comprehensive analysis of electricity transmission, distribution, asset management and data flows – can help optimise network infrastructure. We apply our analytics to power utilities, telecommunications, the oil and gas sector and select manufacturing applications and digital transformation projects.

 

Grid Solutions: GE helps utilities and industry effectively manage electricity from the point of generation to the point of consumption. We provide grid automation and power delivery equipment - from transformers to power sensors, as well as software and analytics – to enhance efficiency, reliability and security.

 

Additive Manufacturing: GE Additive is a world leader and pioneer in additive technology, the industrial version of 3D printing that helps fast-track new materials and innovation in designs and processes. We understand how this technology can help transform businesses by improving products and manufacturing operations and know what it takes to implement this change. For example, GE Healthcare has used additive manufacturing technology for X-ray and CT machines, with 80 per cent fewer parts and 30 per cent cost saving. Similarly, GE Aviation has used additive manufacturing technology to reduce the number of parts in its Advance Turboprop Engine from 855 to 12, while reducing fuel burn by 20 per cent.

 

We partner with a range of institutions, governments, agencies and industries, from aerospace to energy, automotive to healthcare. In Australia, GE and Sydney University are working together to establish Sydney as a global leader in metal additive manufacturing. Minerals rich Australia is a great place to build the sector. In 2019, the NSW Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GE Additive to develop industrial-scale 3D printing at the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. GE is also rolling out 3D printers and curriculum to more than 100 schools across Australia to give students hands-on additive experience.
