Innovative educational projects in Romania

“Scholar-Leaders” Program (2007)

Three year-programme intended to identify outstanding second-year university students who show leadership potential and provide them with opportunities for further success.

The program is unique in that it is more than a monetary scholarship, since the non-monetary part is in fact worth much more: through teambuilding sessions and shadowing opportunities students are given a glimpse of the "soft skills" that will be necessary for them to succeed when they are ready to enter the labor market.

The program will bring together Romanian, Czech, Hungarian and Polish students in an international summer seminar, making them become part of a Central and Eastern European network of young intellectuals, vital for the continued development and integration of the region.

Sponsored by GE Foundation and implemented by the Institute of International Education, the program will prepare students for future careers in an internationally-oriented company in Romania.

"Smile, I'm with you!" (2006)

The project initiated by Catharsis Association and sponsored by GE Money, GE’s consumer finance division, resulted in the building of “Ray of Sunshine Daycare Center for Blind Children” in Brasov– the first institution of that kind in Romania. 40 blind children from Brasov and surrounding areas, aged from 3 to 17 years, are taken care of by qualified staff in a well–equipped center, specially designed to assist them and have them educated, socialized and stimulated to continue their integration in the community.

"Economics for Leaders" - Since 2003

GE Foundation financed a joint programme for the Foundation for Teaching Economics and Junior Achievement Romania. The project enables 50 Economics teachers from 45 high schools in 25 cities to access the latest specialist practical teaching methods, as well as providing guidance for more efficient learning.

"Support an Athlete"

Special Olympics World Games, Dublin, Ireland, 2003

Four athletes (out of 72 on European level) were supported to participate at the largest sporting event in 2003: the Special Olympic World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland. The initiative was a positive way to highlight GE's community investment whilst providing a framework for GE employees to get involved in a worthwhile initiative.

Donation of 30 laptop computers for high schools, supported by GE.

GE donated 20 Ultrasound equipment ($1.8 million donation) to Romanian hospitals nationwide. The project was supported by Rotary USA and Rotary Curtea Veche Romania, which arranged transport, installation and training.
